The health of your gut influences your brain health. Fact.

Poor gut health impacts your brain function due to the good bacteria influencing, and in some cases stimulating, production of chemicals that make you feel good. Impacts include on anxiety and depression levels, release of “happy hormones” such as endorphins (which are natural pain killers – opiate peptides), dopamine production, GABA (direct production by gut bacteria) and serotonin – 90-95% of which has been estimated to be made in the gastrointestinal tract (depending upon which scientific study you read).

Factors that impact your gut (and therefore your happiness levels) include diet, stress, alcohol and drugs (prescription or otherwise).
