Hair loss and medications

Hair loss at different times of life and different levels of health is not uncommon.  Sometimes it may be genetic, sometimes it could be an underlying health issue, or a problem with dietary intake or utilisation of certain vitamins or minerals.

But did you know there are certain medications that may be contributing to this?  If you are on medications, it is best to always read the side effects leaflet or talk to your pharmacist, but some meds that have been implicated in hair loss are:

birth control pills and hormone therapy drugs,
NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs),
thyroid meds,
meds for weight loss,
anti-depressants,
immune-suppressing meds,
steroids,
antibiotics,
cholesterol meds and
acne meds.

If you are experiencing hair loss, think about whether it might be linked to a drug you are using, could it be a dietary problem (yes, this is actually common), or could it be from an underlying condition or problem you are not aware of (eg thyroid, fungal infection, dermatitis or autoimmune conditions).  If you don’t know, it is important to mention this when you are being assessed by your healthcare provider.
